Unfortunately, it’s a harsh truth that numerous animal shelters are overpopulated and, as a result, they resort to putting down dogs if they don’t get adopted within a specific time frame. The reason why many shelter dogs remain homeless is due to their timid or unfriendly demeanor. These dogs have endured cruelty, neglect, or lack of care in the past, which makes it challenging for them to come out of their shell.
The Humane Society of Missouri has introduced an innovative program that offers a unique opportunity for shelter dogs to interact with children in a positive way. Known as the “Shelter Buddies Reading Program,” it enables youngsters between the ages of 6 and 15 to help socialize shelter dogs by reading to them.
The shelter has decided to include the reading activity as a permanent part of their annual holiday celebrations due to its success. “Deck The Howls” is a festive occasion where children can create adoption greeting cards and treats for the animals they are adopting. It would be great if all shelters could introduce this type of program for their “unwanted” dogs!
